What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a normal emotion that we sometimes experience when we sense a threat. Think of the fight-flight-freeze response! This beneficial response can help prepare our body to deal with the threat at hand.

How does anxiety affect a person?

Anxiety can have physical symptoms such as increased heart rate, shortness of breath, or headaches. Psychologically a person may feel tense, fearful or nervous. They may also report difficulties in concentrating.

When is anxiety a problem?

Anxiety may be a problem if you are experiencing excessive worry or dread. It can also be a problem if you find yourself avoiding situations that trigger anxiety or are having difficulties eating or sleeping. Finally, if you find that you are experiencing problems in your relationships or having difficulties at work, then it might be a good time to seek help!

How can you benefit from working with a psychotherapist?

By working with a psychotherapist, you can gain a fresh insight on your thought patterns that lead to anxiety. The psychotherapist can also help to examine triggers that lead to anxiety. Some triggers may be noticed easily (i.e. stressful situations, such as conflicts at work or financial difficulties), but others may be more subtle (i.e. visiting certain places or skipping meals).

What can I expect during a therapy session?

Once the triggers are identified, various tools can be used to help you deal with the symptoms of anxiety. For example, relaxation techniques such as deep breathing can help calm the nervous system. Another tool is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) which works to replace negative thoughts and behaviours associated with anxiety (which are examined in depth during a therapy session) and replace them with more adaptive positive thoughts and behaviours. The majority of treatment plans are 6-8 sessions depending on the goals and needs of each client.
